IKIZTEPE MOUND
The Bafra İkiztepe Archaeological Excavations, which started in 1974 and ended in 2012, will restart in 2021. This cultural heritage, first discovered by archaeologists excavating near Dündar Tepe in 1944, is located within the borders of İkiztepe Village, 7 km northeast of Bafra. The study will commence under the chairmanship of Dr.Aslıhan BEYAZIT, member of Istanbul University, with the sponsorship of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. 15 personnel will work in the excavation, which will start again on August 1st of 2021.
These hills of different sizes, consisting of 2 large and 2 small hills and covering an area of 66 acres with the size of 375x 175, have different cultural layers. 10,728 artifacts including metal, terracotta, bone and stone fragments unearthed in previous excavations are exhibited in Samsun Archeology Museum and Bafra Museum. The region, where traces of the Late Chalcolithic period of the Early Bronze Age before the Hittite are sought, has archaeological and cultural value in many respects. The fact that the people living in the region know mining and textile much better than other people living in the same period is an important feature that distinguishes İkiztepe from other excavation sites. Again, the mass graveyard with 690 skeletons found in the excavation area is one of the largest compared to its counterparts in Anatolia
